Victory on disposable cups

by Claire Young on 18 May, 2018

At Wednesday’s South Gloucestershire Council meeting, Claire Young successfully proposed that South Glos Council take a lead on cutting waste and protecting the environment by banning the use of disposable cups at its offices. This will save around 36,000 non-recyclable cups being thrown-away each year

Also at the meeting we challenged the ruling Conservatives on cuts to gritting routes, millions of pounds of our money being spent by the West of England Mayor and Combined Authority without a proper forward plan and the Metrobus not going to the “Park and Ride” at Parkway station, which was built with money originally earmarked for the Nibley Park and Ride. Once again we pushed for action on regenerating the “Western Gateway of Yate”.

The Conservatives refused to back our motion calling for the badger cull not to be extended to South Gloucestershire, instead rewriting it to call for the culls to continue, despite the evidence put forward by two of our leading animal welfare charities. In the end a compromise was reached calling for the Government to prioritise research into vaccination.
