Around South Gloucestershire there are Resource Bases attached to schools to support children with particular Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Over the summer parents, both of children with SEND and those without, took part in demonstrations after a report was published suggesting changes to those Resource Bases, including the possible closure of the one at Emerson’s Green Primary School. Parents said they hadn’t been properly consulted.
Claire wrote to education chiefs at the council demanding answers. They said this was only the first stage of the process, not the formal consultation. The options in the report were for wider debate and it was not intended to implement them straight away.
They are now carrying out an initial 4-week “engagement phase” with parents and other stakeholders, starting today (9th September). You can find out more on the council’s website. This will then be followed by a first stage consultation, the results of which will be reported back to Cabinet next March. There would then be a formal, statutory consultation later in 2020.
The council has arranged a number of events for parents as part of this engagement phase. You can find out more on the South Glos Parent and Carers’ website.
You have until 4th October to complete the survey online.
