Road closures and temporary traffic lights

by Claire Young on 4 August, 2023

Monitoring of the local road network since National Highways closed the A432 Badminton Road M4 bridge for investigations identified safety issues that needed to be addressed urgently. Last Thursday the council closed the following roads to motorised vehicles:

  • Coalsack Lane
  • Ruffet Road
  • Cooks Lane

Access has been maintained for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders, as well as access for vehicles to residential properties and business premises along these roads.

In addition, four-way temporary traffic lights were installed at the Henfield Road/Westerleigh Road crossroads.

These changes will remain in place for the foreseeable future but there is no intention to make these restrictions permanent. The council will continue to monitor the road network.

We know there are problems with queueing traffic on Henfield Road. The current lights have been set up to prioritise keeping traffic moving along the official diversion route, Westerleigh Road. Council highways officers are aiming to get some more sophisticated lights in before the end of the school holidays to improve the situation but there is quite a bit of infrastructure required to be put in place for this. They cannot simply increase the green light duration for Henfield Road because at times the queues on Westerleigh Road are in danger of impacting on the ring road.

A temporary 30mph speed limit is being introduced on Westerleigh Road around the Henfield crossroads, again for safety and traffic flow reasons.

You can contact the council’s Streetcare team about traffic management issues related to the closure on [email protected] or by calling 01454 868000.

    Hi,
I would like to see these traffic lights made permanent. Its always been difficult pulling out from Henfield Road to turn right onto Westerleigh Road. Traffic can suddenly appear on the brow of the hill.
    Best Regards
    Tony
